The American Pipit (Anthus rubescens) is a small, slender songbird of wide-open landscapes. It breeds in some of North America’s most dramatic environments—from Arctic tundra to windswept alpine meadows—and then appears much farther south during migration and winter, when flocks may gather in farm fields, along muddy shorelines, and beside reservoirs.

At first glance, the American Pipit can seem rather plain. Its gray-brown plumage blends almost perfectly with soil, rocks, dry grass, and mud. Watch for a few moments, however, and its identity often becomes much clearer. American Pipits walk briskly across the ground, repeatedly bob or wag their tails, and frequently reveal white outer tail feathers when they take flight. American Pipits belong to Motacillidae, the family containing pipits and wagtails. Members of this family are generally slender, ground-oriented birds with relatively long legs and a characteristic habit of walking or running while searching for food.

The taxonomy of pipits has changed over time as ornithologists have studied differences in appearance, vocalizations, distribution, and genetics. Long-term monitoring has indicated population declines, and the species depends on healthy tundra, alpine, grassland, wetland-edge, and agricultural habitats during different portions of its annual cycle.

Climate change presents an especially important concern for birds associated with alpine habitats. As temperatures increase, suitable cool high-elevation environments can shift upward, leaving mountain species with progressively less habitat available.
