The Willow Flycatcher (Empidonax traillii) may not be one of North America’s most colorful birds, but for birdwatchers, it presents one of the continent’s classic identification challenges. Small, olive-brown, and subtly marked, it belongs to the notoriously difficult Empidonax group of flycatchers, several of which can look almost identical in the field.

Fortunately, the Willow Flycatcher has one clue that can turn a frustrating identification into a remarkably easy one: its voice. Willow Flycatchers belong to the tyrant flycatcher family, Tyrannidae, an enormous group of primarily insect-eating birds found throughout the Americas.

They are part of the genus Empidonax, whose members have developed a reputation among birders for being exceptionally difficult to identify by appearance alone. Several species share the same small size, upright posture, olive-gray plumage, pale wingbars, and understated facial markings.
